New course: AI and the environment

Artificial Intelligence is booming, and we are only at the beginning of this journey. Today, AI tools have moved far beyond the realm of experimentation and into everyday life. Generative AI models are becoming part of how we search, create and even work.

The rapid adoption of AI is reflected in the remarkable growth of platforms such as ChatGPT, which currently ranks as one of the world’s most visited websites, reaching 5.6 billion visits in May 2026. This global shift is also driving major investments from governments and organisations around the world, all seeking to advance AI capabilities and strengthen their position in an increasingly competitive digital economy.

But as AI continues to expand, so does its environmental impact. Behind every AI model and prompt lies a complex ecosystem of hardware, data centres, and energy consumption. From the resources required to build the infrastructure that supports AI, to the energy needed to train and run increasingly sophisticated models: the environmental implications of AI are significant and deserve attention.

What you’ll learn

Our new course explores the relationship between Artificial Intelligence and the environment, helping businesses understand both the risks and the opportunities ahead.

Building on the expertise of various experts such as Resilio and INRIA (France’s National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology), the course features contributions from renowned researchers, including Jacques Sainte-Marie, Head of the ICT & environment programme, and Claire Monteleoni, ARCHES team leader, alongside insights from Alexis Joly, Scientific and Technical Leader at Pl@ntNet, the INRIA-backed citizen science project exploring biodiversity through artificial intelligence.

Across five chapters, you will discover how AI impacts the environment, and explore effective ways to reduce these impacts – whether as an AI user, designer or project contributor – by adopting more responsible practices and avoiding common pitfalls. The course also explores how AI may be able to support the sustainable transition, and its potential to become part of the response to some of today’s environmental challenges.
