Climate Brief Season 12

Written by Joanna CONNELL

How much is 1.4°C, really? Is your smartphone destined to die suspiciously young? And what exactly goes into the world’s energy recipe?

These are just some of the questions explored in Season 12 of Climate Brief, our series of bite-sized, engaging videos designed to make climate and environmental topics easier to understand, easier to discuss, and above all, easier to fit into a busy workday.

What’s on the menu this season?

Episode 1: Climate Change

At first glance, an increase of 1.4°C in global average temperatures since the pre-industrial era might not sound dramatic. Yet behind that seemingly small number lies one of the greatest challenges humanity has ever faced.

This episode breaks down the causes of climate change, its consequences, and why a few degrees can make all the difference.

Episode 2: The Carbon Footprint

One return flight. Five burgers a week. A brand-new smartphone. An ageing diesel car. What happens when we add it all up?

This episode explores the concept of the carbon footprint, where our emissions come from, and why some sources are easier to influence than others. Expect practical explanations, relatable examples and perhaps a few uncomfortable calculations.

Episode 3: Green Finance

Where we put our money says a lot about the future we’re building. If we’re serious about tackling climate change, investment decisions matter.

This episode takes a closer look at green finance, explaining how financial decisions shape the transition and how investment can become a powerful lever for climate action.

Episode 4: Earth Overshoot Day

Imagine spending your entire annual salary by August.

That’s essentially the idea behind Earth Overshoot Day. It marks the day humanity has theoretically consumed all the natural resources that the Earth can regenerate within that year.

But what does this indicator actually measure? How is it calculated? And what can it tell us about our relationship with the planet’s resources? We’ll break it down (and possibly ruin your perception of calendars forever).

Episode 5: The Energy Mix

Imagine the global energy system as a giant cake recipe. Too much of one ingredient and things can go very wrong.

The success of the recipe therefore depends not only on what goes into the mix, but also on getting the proportions right.

In this episode, we explore the concept of the energy mix and why the balance between energy sources plays such a crucial role in tackling climate change. No baking experience required.

Episode 6: Planned Obsolescence

Ever had a device stop working so suddenly that it felt personal?

While proving deliberate planned obsolescence is often difficult, the lifespan of many everyday products certainly raises important questions.

This episode examines product durability, repairability, consumption habits and the broader environmental implications of replacing rather than repairing.
